Shopping

The center of Copenhagen is rather small, but you’ll find few places with so much inspiration packed in so little space.
Most popular
København K is the main shopping area: Most people start their shopping at Strøget, which runs through the heart of Copenhagen from Kgs. Nytorv to city hall. Strøget is to be avoided in the peak traffic hours but is great for a stroll on a Tuesday morning. Shops open between 10 and 11. In the stretch closest to city hall the place is dominated by young fashion and department stores that are replaced by high-end fashion the further towards Kgs. Nytorv you get. Here you’ll also find the huge department store Magasin that has a great food department in the basement level. The main shopping street is an overload of magnificent architecture, so take the time to look up from the store windows.
Various neighbourhoods
The various neighborhoods each have their own characteristics: avant-garde, underground and high fashion. Kronprinsensgade and around is packed with stores selling Danish fashionable clothes, shoes, house ware and food. You will find art and design in the area around Amalienborg, and small interesting stores in Larsbjørnsstræde and Studiestræde, which houses tattoo parlors, vintage shops, designer clothes and some of the city’s most cozy cafés and bars. Strædet has smaller venues selling jewelry, arts and crafts and antiques. Elsewhere, check Elmegade (Nørrebro) that has a cool record store, a lot of street wear and sneaker stores and upcoming designers’ unique productions. Istedgade (Vesterbro) houses the most famous coffee shops, local designers and loads of Middle East merchandise such as lamps, pipes and statuettes in the kitschy corner. Østerbrogade (Østerbro) has some of Copenhagens most exclusive stores selling international brands.
Cheap shopping
The cheapest stores are the large chains such as H&M, but if you want local designers, be prepared to pay more – but also to get better quality. The big sales are on at the end of each season, the biggest one being the January sale starting January second.
